The Chinese People in Indonesia : The history

I always wonder about the overseas Chinese. As we may know, Chinese People are everywhere in this world. What made them migrate?

I found a website, balitouring.com, through Google search that discuss about the Chinese People in Indonesia. It is written in the website :

In every part of Indonesia especially in cities always presence the Chinese. But most Indonesian do not know them well. There are actually 4 groups of Chinese who have settled in Indonesia. These 4 groups are based on their language and origin in China. Chinese migration into Indonesia was happened between 16th to 19th century.

  1. Hokkien people, was coming from Fukien Province as area very important for the history of Chinese trade in the south. They have a character that they are very diligent, patient, and delicate. They are very good in trading. So most of them are economically success. Their migration into Indonesia reached a wide area in east Indonesia, central Java, East Java, and west Sumatra.
  2. Teo-Chiu and Hakka (Khek) people from southern part of China in hinterland of Swatow of eastern Kwantung Province. The Teo-Chiu and Hakka people was emplyed in the minings, such as East Sumatera, Bangka island, and Biliton.
  3. Kanton people ( Kwong Fu ), was the resident of southern part of Kwantung province. At the beginning they were interested by Indonesian mining industry, and they come with skill. They are the people who own shops, and blacksmiths. They are not as many as Hakka and Teo-Chiu.
For Indonesian the 4 groups are not important, as they are much more known as:
  1. Indonesian - Chinese or " Peranakan"
  2. Original Chinese or "Totok"

This classification is much based on the degree of their assimilation and acculturation with the local people and culture. Most Hokkien who migrated first to Indonesia has experienced deep assimilation and acculturation, even their physical characters are almost the same as local people due to the marriage exchange. They mostly forget their language, and speak local language and Indonesian.

Group of migration that live in west Java, Sumatea West Kalimantan there are still Totok with Chinese villages, speak their own language and continiue their culture in Indonesia.

During Dutch colonization with the different treatment in social status and affairs, they did not want to be classified as the local. This is again grown by the China Nationalist propaganda arises during 20th century. This propadanda of re-orientating their nation. This is given an advantage again with China system of nationality of father's blood lineage or nationality based on blood relation called ius sanguinis. This policy before 1955 had caused double nationality. The most important from this impact is the growing awareness of the Great China family or in simple a process of totonized.

In general most Chinese in Indonesia work in trade, especially the Hokkien. In West Java and West Sumatera they are farmers. In Bagan Siapi-api ( Riau ) the Hokkien are fishermen. The Hakka in Sumatera work as labor in minings, while in West Kalimantan they are farmers. The Teo-Chiu work as farmers but many also labor in farm estates in East Sumatera.

The trade of Chinese in Indonesia is based on family's ownership and management. Mostly small size and do not need worker from outside. If their business growing, they open new branch which is given to their brother, child or any family member to manage, except if they build limited corporation do they works with other Chinese clan or even other ethnic that they consider profitable.

It was a paradigm that the Totok consider the Peranakan is lower in class due to their mixed blood, while the Peranakan consider the Totok is lower in class as they are all coming to Indonesia as labor. During Dutch colonization the Chinese as if they were an autonomous society and was permitted to rebuild their own culture in Indonesia, and just after the ethnic getting strong the Dutch realized the situation and closed all education belong the the exclusive Chinese and their organization. During Japan control on Dutch East India, all western schools were closed, and again Chinese school rebuilt. After the independence of Indonesia all educational facility and system were reorganized and adjusted under the basic constitution of Indonesia, that the Educational Facility is for all, and no special treatment be exist. Starting from 1957 all Indonesian must follow the rules no exception of any ethnic.

Kinship system of Chinese in Indonesia is almost the same as main ethnic cultures in Indonesia such as marriage suggestion and interdiction. The only different is their family unit is much bigger ( big virilocal ). The status of women in the past was low and become the subject of her husband, brothers, and their parent in law. A man pursue to have boy, and as long as the boy has not yet born, the husband can take more women.

In Indonesia the Chinese follow Buddhist, Kung Fu-tse, Christian and Islam, although in Great Chine the population are Buddhist. The strong belief of Chinese is their love to the ancestors, although they are already passed this world, their body is cremated, and the ash is kept at home, in a ceramic vas. They also celebrate the Chinese New Year called " Imlek" in Indonesia, while in Great China it is called " Summer Feast ", and in Bali is called " Chinese Galungan"

Summer Holiday begins

I am in my room now in Taoyuan. I am doing the slideshow of travelling trip picture with my family. Our travelling trip going around Taiwan lasted 1 week.

On June 21, my parents and my sister arrived. We spent time together going around not far. I had the task to introduce "new things" to them. On June 26, we met the travelling group from Medan and we went around Taiwan together with the group.

We started from Taipei. On the first day, we went to Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall, The Martyre Shrine where we can watch honored guard exchange ceremony, and crossing the Presidential Palace. At night we went to Rao He nightmarket. It is not as big as Shilin nightmarket but it is still good.

The next day, the trip continued to Hualien. On the way, we stopped at Taroko Gorge which we can see a lot of marble in size of rock and the mountain. Unfortunately, it was raining heavily at that time. All of us didn't dare to enter deeply to avoid unexpected situation to be happened. At night, we went to watch the aboriginal dancing show by Ami tribe in Ami Cultural Village.

It was reported the next day on news that there were 13 earthquakes happened in Hualien. Taroko Gorge was closed for tourists on that day. We knew that news when we were on the way to Kaohsiung. The first place in Kaohsiung that we visited was Fo Guang Shan temple. It was the biggest Buddhist temple in Taiwan with a 40-metre gold-covered statue of Buddha inside temple. Then we moved to Spring and Autumn Pavilion and Sin Jiao Jiang nightmarket.

We moved on to Alishan on the next day. Alishan is one of three mountains in the world that has railway. It is located up to 2,000 metre of sea surface. The weather is cold in Alishan. I miss this weather very much especially on summer days like now.

At 3.30 am the next day, all of us woke up and prepared to see the sunrise. Lots of tourists gathered already when we arrived the train station. We went up the hill to watch sunrise by train. Then we moved on to Taichung. On the way, we stopped at an amusement park, Jan Fu Sun Fancy World.

The next morning, we went to Window on China. Here, a lot of world famous building miniature can be found, from Mini Asia to Mini Europe and also waterpark as well as amusement park. Afterwards, we went to Taipei by bullet train from HSR (High Speed Rail) Hsinchu Station. As soon as we arrived Taipei, we continued going to National Palace Museum, Taipei 101, and Xi Men Ding to shop.

Xi Men Ding is the final place in the trip. My parents and my sister went to Penang, Malaysia yesterday while I went back home in Taoyuan. Today my parents and my sister arrive home.

Dragon boat Festival

It was Dragon boat Festival on 28-30th last month. To celebrate Dragon boat Festival, people always prepare "rice dumplings". "Rice dumplings" is a bunch of rice cooked with meat, egg, and vegetables inside. Then it is wrapped with certain kind of leave. It is very oily.

I and my friends went to watch the competition of Dragon boat in Keelung River, Taipei. The location is vast. There were lots of people, mostly foreigners. The competition was held for three days. It started from Thursday to Saturday. So the final competition would be on Saturday.

"People in action" : Waiting for the bus.

"People in action" : one of many competitors.

"People in action" : ...and here are the supporters.

"People in action" : I and dragon boat at back.

Actually, it was only four people of us. We met another group of friends in Taipei while going to wait for bus. I and 신지현 arrived Taipei at around 12.30 pm. After that we went to meet Lindy and Debbie then go straight to have lunch. We went to a shop named "Magic Curry". The name is really funny. At first I was wondering what is the "magic" of this curry. Then I found out nothing related to "magic". The taste was good. There were lots of choices in curry. After lunch, we went straight to the competition location.

"Magic Curry"

"People in action" : 신지현, Lindy, Debbie, Teddy (me), and Japanese papa. We met him accidentally then we started to chat. He is a kind papa.

PTPI Trip : Pingshi

This time PTPI held a trip to Pingshi. It is located in Taipei County. The special thing to do in Pingshi is making sky lantern. The sky lantern is big. The rule is every member of groups will fold a large paper into a sky lantern. Then write wishes on the paper (read: sky lantern) before let it fly to the sky.

In the morning, we gathered at the usual place, in front of girls' dormitory. I thought that we will go by bus. I was quite shocked that we went there by train. Nobody told me about this before. At last I found out that in order to reach Pingshi, we should go by train. Fortunately, I didn't come late because we took the public bus (read: No 7 bus) to Taoyuan City. Then we walked to the train station which is located near to the bus stop. We took the train to Badu station to meet the groups from Taipei campus.

"Teddy in action" : here is the end of this train.

We started the trip from Jingtong. Jingtong station is located only one station next to Pingshi station. The fantastic thing to do in Jingtong is taking photo in the middle of train railway. It may sounds dangerous to do but anyway that is the most memorable experience would be had.

"Teddy in action" : Jingtong Station.

"Teddy in action" : Don't worry. Lots of people do this.

Then we moved on to Shihfen Old street which is in Pingshi. As the name is, the environment is old such as the building. We stopped in one shop where we made our sky lantern. The name of the shop is "Grandma's Flying Lanterns". It is quite a unique name. The shop was named after someone that played an important role in it, "Grandma".

Story of Grandma.

"Teddy in action" : This is my group's sky lantern.

LeoFoo Village Theme Park

Check this out --> LeoFoo Village Theme Park

It was such a hot day when I went there. I think this is one of many tourism places that cannot be missed. It is Leo Foo Village Theme Park. There are wet and dry games as well as zoo. The ticket fee is supposed to be NT890 but we paid only NT690. Maybe it was during promotion period or else. Once I entered, I got a good impression about the place. The design of the building is good especially in Arabian area. It is awesome! The name is Arabian Kingdom because of the architecture design.

In front of Arabian Kingdom gate. We looked quite messy after playing in wet games. When I mentioned "wet", it means "really wet".

There were 8 people in total that went there. Almost all of my friends dare to play the games, such as roller coaster and even more challenging than roller coaster. To be honest, I don't dare to play such games like that. Shame of me, :-D

I accidentally found Turkish Ice-cream. I thought it is only existed in Danshui, Taipei. The ice-cream is different from the common ice-cream. It can be put upside down and won't get off from the cone.

Look at those Turkish Ice-cream. It is sticky!

By the way, I will write about the way we went there. At first, we took train from Taoyuan to Zhongli. After arrived in Zhongli Train Station, we walked to the ticket office in front of it (walk cross the road). We bought bus ticket to Leo Foo Village and Done! The bus to Leo Foo Village also passed by 小人國 (so sorry I don't remember the english name) which is also a tourism destination. For sure, one day I will go there. There are a lot of miniatures of famous building in the world.

Dog named "Teddy"

Yesterday I met Alice in library. She went to library too because she wanted to borrow a learning English book. Soon as she had arrived, she found me and we sat together. I was doing my calculus when she arrived. Then she took out her stuff, lots of paper. It was about giving comment to her Chinese tutor. So everytime she has had her Chinese class, she will be given one paper to write about what she has learnt on that day, how did she feel, so forth. It can be called as her homework and she didn't do it on the day she finished her class. Instead, she did it in library yesterday. Lazy Alice. After I had done with my calculus homework, I helped her to check her english writing. Her english is good just some problems on grammar. Then there was announcement for student to leave because the library would be closed soon. I hadn't done my correction on her paper so I asked her to move to FF building (it is a building for self-learning).

As we arrived there, it was a little bit messy inside because of the new furnitures and it was hot. We moved to stadium on the field. There we chatted while I continued to do my correction on her paper. In the middle of our chatting, I heard someone was calling my name. Alice did hear too. My focus then moved to a man standing on one side of the field calling his dog while his dog ran towards him from the other side of the field. WTF?! I asked again to Alice if she heard that man calling his dog Teddy? She kept laughing. I was quite embarassed why such a popular name is given to a dog. haha Then I continue on what I was doing and after I had done, we went to have dinner together.

Oh ya, Alice gave me some Korean snacks that her mother sent her.
Thanks anyway.

Komm gib mir deine Hand

My friend came up just now in facebook messaging. She was my high school classmate and also we were classmate in German class (extracurricular). It had been a long time after I graduated and I never practice German. Now I am getting lost a little by a little, haha. So shame! so schade!
Fortunately she chatted using German and a little english and indonesian with me so I could remember again my German, haha. In the middle of our chat, a message appeared that she had posted a link to video. The video is about song by The Beatles, "Komm gib mir deine Hand". The english title is "I want to hold your hand". It is quite old song but it amazes me. I just know that there is German version of this song. First I know about this song from one Taiwanese serial drama. I found the video in Youtube then I posted it here because the facebook version cannot be posted. Enjoy !

Here is the lyric of "Komm gib mir deine Hand" (modified).
Oh, komm doch,
Komm zu mir,
Du nimmst mir den Verstand.
Oh, komm doch,
Komm zu mir,
Komm gib mir deine Hand.
Komm gib mir deine Hand.
Komm gib mir deine Hand.

Oh, du bist so schön,
Schön wie ein Diamant,
Ich will mit dir gehen,
Komm gib mir deine Hand.
Komm gib mir deine Hand.
Komm gib mir deine Hand.

In deinen Armen bin ich glücklich und froh;
Das war noch nie bei einer andern
Einmal so.
Einmal so.
Einmal so.

Oh, du bist so schön,
Schön wie ein Diamant,
Ich will mit dir gehen,
Komm gib mir deine Hand.
Komm gib mir deine Hand.
Komm gib mir deine Hand.

Amazingly boring !

This is about Accounting class. Yierrr.. the subject is OK. It is not as difficult as I thought before. The problem is on the teacher. She cannot communicate her knowledge with her students. I prefer her TA more rather than her. The class is getting smaller and smaller. Lots of students become late. She is now popular with the saying "Revenue (raeveneww...). She keeps using that term in explaining and it sounds funny when she pronounces it. It is really boring to be in class. People are doing other things in class : sleeping, chatting, browsing, read other book, so forth. What can be said? Life like this, haha. This is my second semester in freshmen and I think I still need to take the Accounting class next semester because we still have another half of the book. Basically the main idea of Accounting is quite simple. To transfer information in order and in suitable terms. The rest is only addition and substraction. On our last meeting, on Thursday, the teacher said that there will be quiz on Monday which is Accounting Lab class. Fortunately, it was changed to Thursday because many seniors students were busy preparing prom night party. Well that's a good idea, it means that I can have more time to study. I wonder where the question is taken. She used to give quiz question from book but not now. Now, she displays the question on slide.

Eggs-tremely creative !

Our psychology teacher, Eva, seems to bring lots of stuffs yesterday when she entering the class. I knew that it must be another activity. It was fun in this class. We play and learn at the same time. She started the class that day by giving lecture about "Intelligent". It is proved that people have not only 1 but 8 intelligences (Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences)
.
They are :
1) Linguistic "word smart".
2) Logical-mathematical "number smart".
3) Musical "music smart".
4) Spatial "picture smart".
5) Bodily-kinesthetic "body smart".
6) Interpersonal "people smart".
7) Intrapersonal "self smart".
8) Naturalist "nature smart".

Then the time passed. And finally during the last period of the class, the activity began. We were asked to sit in group. Each group was given 15 straws, rubber bans, 4 pieces of paper, 4 ballons, and an egg, a real chicken egg. An egg? Yes. Our task was how to modified with these stuffs so that the egg won't break when be thrown from one upper level.
People were so creative that different and ridiculous creation created. There was one amazing creation, "Egg in parachute". So the idea was to put the egg under a "parachute" and then let it fly down as people parachuting. It worked. The idea was remarkable.
